The Tower of the Americas – Texas Tourist Attraction Series
The Tower of the Americas, standing tall as one of the highest structures in San Antonio, serves as a prominent and iconic landmark that is widely recognized across the country, representing the city of San Antonio.
The Tower of the Americas is an observation tower-restaurant located in the Hemisfair district on the south-eastern portion of Downtown San Antonio, Texas, United States. The tower was designed by San Antonio architect O’Neil Ford and was built as the theme structure of the 1968 World’s Fair, HemisFair ’68. It was named as a result of a contest created by the executive committee. 68 people submitted the name the tower is now known by.
The Tower (including the antenna) rises 750 feet (229m) above HemisFair Park and offers a diverse selection of activities for visitors of all kinds.
Observation Deck:
It houses an observation deck and revolving restaurant which offer a panoramic view of the San Antonio and the surrounding areas. The restaurant rotates slowly, and observation deck entry is included in the cost of a tower ticket. The elevator ride from the ground to the observation deck is approximately 1 minute 15 seconds. Visitors are helped in identifying local landmarks from the deck.
Visitors are also shown historic photos offering a glimpse into the city’s former landscape. The observation deck area offers a chance to learn about the history of San Antonio, with information on The Battle of The Alamo, Louis St. Denis’ mapping of the Camino Real Trail, and Spain’s rule over Texas that lasted more than 3 centuries. There’s a much-loved 4D theatre ride too up there and other attractions.

Quick Facts:
The tower weighs 80 million pounds and has 952 steps to get to the top. The concrete shaft in the center is 45 feet in diameter. The three elevators can carry 1,950 passengers per hour.
