Having a Great Team Is Critical For A Hotel’s Success

No man is an island. You alone cannot do everything. That is why it is important to build a great team that can act out on your behalf in your absence. If you want your hotel to succeed, make sure the team you are building is really a remarkable one.

Even if you do all the things right, your hotel may not succeed greatly without a proper team. You need excellent front desk staff who really care about providing best possible customer service. You need dedicated housecleaning team who do their job really well and ensure the hotel is clean and looks good.

In order to have a great team you need to:

  • Hire the right candidates.
  • Train them properly,
  • Clarify the roles and responsibilities of each, set clear expectations and then provide some freedom and flexibility
  • Provide them required tools to execute their jobs,
  • Track and monitor them periodically, but don’t micromanage them
  • Reward them handsomely if they do their work in a nice manner.

All of the above steps are important. You may not be able to have an excellent team if you ignore any of the above steps. If you are not careful during the hiring process you may pay heavy price later on. Similarly if you don’t train the candidates after hiring, they may not be able to do their jobs properly which can cost you business.

Thirdly if you don’t set clear job responsibilities, roles and expectations, it could lead to lot of confusion and even resentment. People will not know what exactly is expected of them, they will not be sure what their main job responsibilities are. If the workers are doing something today and are assigned some other task tomorrow, it could make them feel frustrated.

Moreover they may feel the management is exploiting them and giving them additional tasks which are not primarily their responsibility. This could lead to resentment, conflicts and other problems. Next up is to provide the workers with all the required tools and resources needed for them to execute their tasks properly.

If you fail to provide the needed tools, it could cause difficulties for the workers and make them want to quit. Try to make things easy for them; facilitate the tasks for them, give them some freedom, don’t be constantly at their back. At the same time, do monitor them and make them accountable for fulfilling their responsibilities.

Finally if you have done everything correctly till now but if you don’t pay the workers sufficiently it could again lead to loss of job satisfaction. The workers may not continue doing a great job for long periods of time if they feel they are not getting sufficient remuneration.
