What to Avoid Doing in a New City

Any trip to a new place is usually accompanied by a big list of things to accomplish. Most likely, you’ll want to visit museums, do a few excursions, go out to eat and drink, and essentially do everything you can before the vacation clock runs out. However, there are instances when certain dont’s need to be inserted into your itinerary to keep you safe.

Don’t Pass Up Freebies:

Cities, particularly the costliest ones (Oslo, Geneva, Zurich, Copenhagen, and New York), swallow your money like a high-powered vacuum cleaner. Take advantage of a destination’s more generous side to protect your pocket. Most cities have some museums and monuments that are free to visit. Always bring ID if you are a student, teacher, senior, or member of the military – more freebies or discounts may fall into your lap.

Don’t Take a Taxi:

Moving around in the city in a cab is expensive. Budget tourists should choose public transit. When travelling from airports to hotels or any accommodations use public transport. Most large airports are connected to the nearby downtown area by trains, buses, and/or shared shuttles.

Plan Ahead For Events:

Metropolitan areas are densely crowded with millions of citizens and additional thousands of tourists, so it’s no surprise that events and restaurants are usually booked full – many times well in advance. While certain activities thrive on the last-minute rush, many events need some planning ahead of time. Examine the calendars provided by tourism bureaus, cultural groups, and well-informed media outlets.

Don’t Forget to Bring Your Map:

Whether you use an old-fashioned paper map or a mapping tool, you want a larger perspective of the city, including how the neighbourhoods are organised. This will help you arrange your tour and save you from wandering into dangerous regions. Online reviews, guidebooks, and your hotel’s front desk may all assist you in determining which areas of the city are safe to visit and worth exploring.

Don’t Ignore The Outlier Areas:

Don’t just spin circles in the central city; venture out and check out areas around the outskirts. Scenes that are a little more real, experimental or exotic can be found in a city’s suburbs and outlying neighbourhoods.
