Demopolis is not as popular tourist destination as some others but visitors to this smaller yet beautiful city are pleasantly surprised when they arrive here. The city has lot to offer tourists and it is a place where you are likely to feel a ‘wow’ sensation when you visit.

Many tourists do not have big expectations when they arrive here but a lot of them leave with a desire to visit again in future. It is an upcoming tourist destination which is becoming popular very fast among all sections of travelers.

Some of the main tourist attractions in Demopolis, Alabama include:

1. Gaineswood – It is a plantation house in Demopolis and one of the grandest plantation houses ever built in Marengo County. Much of the construction was done by enslaved labors in the 1800s. A visit to this place can reveal to you glimpses of nineteenth century life. The house is filled with antebellum furnishings and remarkable decorative arts.

2. Foscue Creek Park – It is located at the banks of Demopolis lake. It is triangular shaped and nicely maintained by the US Army Corps of Engineers. The facility has both a day-use area and a campground. You can find benches for wildlife viewing. The campground has around 54 campsites which are spacious, private and located close to the water.

3. Demopolis Public Library – Started in 1922, the library’s aim is to provide reading materials and services to meet the educational and professional needs of the local community. The library has a collection of books, DVDs, ebooks, etc. The library building is a historic one in downtown Demopolis.

4. Demopolis Sports Plex – This a 299 acre park located one mile south of Highway 80. The park features youth and adult baseball/softball complexes with restroom facilities, 6 soccer fields (5 out of them are lighted), a public pond for fishing, a playground, 1.5 mile walking trail, and an 18 hole golf course.

5. Aldridge Gardens – Aldridge Gardens is a 30-acre woodland garden featuring hydrangeas nestled in the heart of Hoover. It is truly an ideal visiting place for people who want to have a peaceful and relaxing time close to nature, trees and colorful flowers. This is a 30-acre former property of well-known horticulturist Eddie Aldridge and his wife Kay.

Since it first opened to the public in 2002, its popularity has risen steadily and it has now become a highly popular tourist attraction in the greater Birmingham area. The Gardens host plant sales, art exhibits and shows, classes and seminars, bird walks, fishing days and more.
