The city is known for its diverse population, beautiful hills, pleasant weather and progressive mentality of its people. This was once a railroad town that served as a gateway to  other remote places of the Southeast. It has evolved greatly over the years to now become one of the largest and most vibrant cities of Georgia. Atlanta is still a significant transportation hub in the region.

Best Time to Visit

Spring is a great time to visit Atlanta when the flowers are in full bloom. Fall is also a good time to visit this charming city. January is the coldest month while July is on average the hottest month of the year here. 

 

Natural Beauty of Atlanta

Atlanta is situated just under 100 miles from the Blue Ridge Mountains, so tourists can enjoy hiking and can explore the natural beauty surrounding the mountains. The city also has several beautiful parks and walking trails.  

Atlanta Botanical Garden – This is an urban oasis in the heart of Midtown Atlanta, with 30-acres of lush, colorful gardens. Kids will absolutely love the award-winning Children’s Garden. The Fuqua Conservatory houses important collections of tropical palms, conifers and the foremost collection of orchids.

Stone Mountain – This is one of the must-see natural wonders in Atlanta. It’s only about 10 miles northeast of the city and a huge mass of granite among the region’s rolling hills.  The path up the mountain is steep so be ready for a workout. There are lot of attractions and programs hosted in Stone Mountain throughout the year.

Callaway Garden – This is another must-visit location which is situated just about an hour and half drive from Atlanta proper. There is a lot to see and experience in this place. It may not be possible to see all things in a single day so do consider staying here for a couple of days to enjoy all that the place has to offer. Thankfully there are lot of good accommodations to make your stay easy.  

Callaway Gardens is housed on 2500 acres of landscape and includes extensive and beautiful gardens, wooden areas and much more. You can do hiking, boating among other things. There are dozens of activities  you can try out, many educational opportunities as well as events where you can participate in and learn. 

Dunwoody Nature Center – Located amidst think foliage and pretty trees, Dunwoody Nature Center features lots of natural areas with places to jump, swing, teetertotter, splash, hike, play and more. Little kids will love discovering play structures tucked among the trees, and everyone can enjoy resting in a hammock shaded by the canopy nearby.

Georgia Aquarium – One of the favorite destinations to go with your kids is the Georgia Aquarium which has a wide variety of marine life and some very interesting activities for visitors. It is the world’s largest aquarium and houses more than 100,000 aquatic creatures, including the largest creature of the ocean – whale sharks. 

Piedmont Park – It is located at a short distance from downtown Atlanta. It is the oldest and largest park in the city. You can find walking and running trails, off-leash dog parks, gardens, sports fields, a lake with fishing piers, children’s playgrounds, a swimming pool at the Piedmont Park Aquatic Center, and a splash pad for children at the Legacy Fountain. 

Lake Lanier – Lake Lanier is situated about 50 miles north of Atlanta. It is located on 38,000 acres and offers a huge variety of outdoor adventure activities. The large lake offers tons of water sports such as canoeing, kayaking, paddle boarding and fishing as well as wake boarding and water skiing. Then there are around 90 arks to bike, hike, walk around and explore. There are so many things here that you can spend many days and still not see all there is to see!
